Washington—U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a message to those seeking political change in Cuba, urging them to consider confidential collaboration with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). According to reports, the official stated that “now is the time.”
In his message posted on social media, Rubio alluded to
discontent over broken promises, corruption, and the privileges of a minority,
calling for discreet collaboration with the U.S. intelligence agency.
The statement came hours after President Donald Trump
asserted, during a rally in Florida, that the United States would address Cuba
once the conflict with Iran was resolved. The president also alluded to the
possibility of U.S. military vessels passing near the island and indicated that
Rubio would have a role in managing the situation.
The Secretary of State's call represents an escalation in
Washington's rhetoric toward Havana and comes amid economic sanctions, energy
restrictions, and diplomatic tensions between the two governments.
So far, Rubio has not publicly detailed what kind of
cooperation he expects from Cuban citizens or what its scope would be. His
statements could increase friction between the two countries, in a context
marked by Cuba's economic crisis and differences regarding the island's
political future.
