Google DeepMind President Demis Hassabis warned that artificial intelligence (AI) systems could cause serious incidents within one or two years if technology companies and governments do not adopt stricter security measures.
During an AI summit held this Wednesday in Dublin, Ireland,
Hassabis noted that recent incidents involving autonomous systems should be
considered warning signs, especially given the rapid development of this
technology.
The executive explained that, although the incidents
recorded so far have not reached considerable severity, the situation could
change as the systems acquire greater capabilities and autonomy.
Among the risks that concern specialists are the use of AI
to carry out cyberattacks, the unexpected behavior of autonomous agents, and
the possibility that these tools could be used for malicious purposes.
Given this situation, Hassabis called for greater
collaboration between companies in the sector and government authorities to
establish mechanisms for evaluating, monitoring, and protecting systems before
their large-scale implementation. He also emphasized the importance of
developing international security standards.
