Russia Could Use “General Armageddon” to Intensify Attacks Against Ukraine

Russia may redeploy General Sergei Surovikin, known as “General Armageddon” for his reputation as a hardliner, in an attempt to intensify military pressure on Ukraine, according to reports of possible movements within the Russian command. Among the scenarios being considered is a campaign of attacks against strategic Ukrainian infrastructure, with particular attention to the bridges spanning the Dnieper River, a vital waterway for communications and transportation in the country. The Dnieper divides important regions of Ukraine, and its crossings are crucial for the functioning of transportation networks and supply chains. Any offensive against these structures could disrupt mobility and logistics, while also increasing risks to the civilian population and essential services. Surovikin gained notoriety during his military career for his participation in Russian operations in Syria and for his role leading Russian forces in Ukraine in 2022, a period in which Russia intensified its attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Should a change in the Russian command structure materialize, its consequences would depend on the general's assigned duties and the strategic decisions the Kremlin makes as the war unfolds.
