Marco Rubio Visits Keflavík Air Base During His Stay in Iceland

ICELAND - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Keflavík Air Base during his stay in Iceland, where he toured a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, used for surveillance and submarine tracking.

The visit highlighted the strategic importance Washington attributes to Iceland within its security operations in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. The P-8A Poseidon is part of the U.S. capabilities designed to detect and monitor submarine activity in the area.

During the tour, Rubio received explanations about the operation of the aircraft's equipment, including systems related to submarine detection. The presence of these aircraft in Iceland is part of the maritime surveillance operations that the United States conducts in coordination with its NATO allies.

The visit took place during Rubio's tour of European allies and included talks with Icelandic officials on security, economic cooperation, and the growing strategic importance of the Arctic.

Rubio noted that Iceland occupies a pivotal position for Western security and expressed Washington's willingness to explore closer cooperation in light of the changing security environment in the far north.

The visit also reflects renewed U.S. interest in the Arctic, a region that has gained greater geopolitical significance due to competition among powers and heightened security concerns in the North Atlantic.
