BRASILIA— Eduardo Bolsonaro reacted with satisfaction to the results of the first round of Brazil's presidential elections, after his brother, Flávio Bolsonaro, obtained the most votes and advanced to the second round against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In a post on the social network X, Eduardo expressed his
satisfaction with the electoral performance of the Liberal Party candidate and
with the result obtained by the political movement identified with Bolsonarism.
The first round represented a significant boost for the
Bolsonaro family. With virtually all ballots counted, Flávio Bolsonaro reached
approximately 47% of the valid votes, while Lula obtained just over 45%, a
difference that placed the Liberal Party candidate in first place.
The result now requires both candidates to face each other
again at the polls. The second round is scheduled for October 25, in a contest
that promises to be one of the most polarized in Brazil's recent history.
For Eduardo Bolsonaro, the result also represents a sign
that the Brazilian electorate maintains significant support for right-wing
positions and the political project associated with his family.
Flávio's campaign has sought to present the result as proof
of a demand for change in the country. After the results were announced, the
candidate stated that "Brazil wants change" and maintained that the
outcome represents the beginning of the end of the Workers' Party's period of
dominance.
