US President Donald Trump has initiated a process to
designate certain branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist
Organizations (FTOs).
The measure, established through an executive order,
instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Secretary of the Treasury to
evaluate various branches of the organization and determine whether they meet
the requirements established by US law to receive such a designation.
The order also includes financial measures against the
designated entities, with the aim of preventing them from accessing resources
and limiting their operations.
Subsequently, the United States moved forward with the
designation of some specific branches. In January 2026, the Lebanese branch was
designated a foreign terrorist organization, while in March, the Sudanese
branch followed suit.
The measure represents a hardening of Washington's policy
toward various structures linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, although it should
not be confused with an automatic designation of the entire organization
worldwide.
