Florida, United States — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the signing of legislation that seeks to prevent the application of Islamic law, or Sharia, in the state, while also confirming measures to designate the Muslim Brotherhood, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), and Antifa as foreign terrorist organizations.
During the announcement, DeSantis linked these groups to a
political movement that combines elements of Islamism with socialism.
“We are seeing the fusion of Islamism and socialism,” the
governor declared, defending the measures adopted by his administration.
DeSantis also maintained that the designation of these
organizations would have consequences for the benefits and resources they could
receive. “If we have designated these groups as foreign terrorist organizations,
they do not receive benefits,” he stated.
The initiative is part of the security and cultural policy
agenda promoted by the Republican governor of Florida, defending American
culture and life. In recent years, the state has passed various measures
related to immigration, security, education, and organizations considered a
threat by authorities.
The application of Sharia law and the classification of
organizations as terrorist groups are controversial legal and political issues
in the United States, primarily due to the likely opposition of left-leaning
Democrats. The viability and scope of these measures depend on state and
federal jurisdiction, as well as potential judicial review.
DeSantis's statements come amid a growing national debate on
extremism, religious freedom, immigration, and security—issues that continue to
generate deep divisions within American politics.
