An agent involved in the investigation related to Jack Smith asserted that he was not informed that some of the phone records he was to obtain through a subpoena belonged to members of Congress.
The agent explained that he received the phone numbers as
part of the investigative process, but at the time he was unaware of the
owners' identities. According to his testimony, he later discovered that among
the requested numbers were lines linked to legislators.
The official stated that, had he known from the outset that
they belonged to members of Congress, he would have consulted with his
superiors to determine if additional procedures or authorizations were
necessary.

The requested records contained information about calls,
such as phone numbers, dates, and call durations, but not the content of the
conversations.
