LISBON—Portuguese
leader André Ventura publicly defended Portugal's burka ban and issued a
message to those who question the new restrictions on wearing garments that
completely cover the face.
"You
want to wear a burka? It's very easy, go back to your country of origin. Take a
flight to Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan. Not here!" Ventura declared in
support of the measure.
The
political leader's stance comes amid a European debate on the use of face
coverings in public spaces, an issue that involves arguments related to
security, identification, religious freedom, and individual rights.
Ventura
has consistently advocated for stricter immigration policies and stronger
