A report published by the New York Post has once again put California Governor Gavin Newsom's political circle in the spotlight, revealing that the FBI allegedly infiltrated his inner circle during a federal investigation related to a fraud and tax evasion case.
According to the publication, Democratic figure Alexis
Podesta allegedly collaborated with federal agents by covertly recording conversations
with Dana Williamson, who served as Newsom's chief of staff. Williamson pleaded
guilty in May to various federal charges related to fraud and tax evasion, a
development that gave the investigation a new twist.
The claim that Podesta used a hidden recording device was
made public by Williamson's defense attorney. However, no public evidence has
yet been presented to confirm this assertion. For its part, the office of the
embattled Governor Newsom denied any connection between the governor and the actions
described in the report, stating that there is no evidence that an alleged FBI
informant, or the purported use of a hidden microphone, was related to the
governor or the performance of his duties.
The information comes at a time of heightened political
activity in California. During the past week, several state reforms have gone
into effect, including new legal provisions, an increase in the fuel tax, and
the mandatory return of numerous public employees to in-person work.
At the same time, the state's political landscape has been
marked by strategic moves within the Democratic Party. Both former Vice
President Kamala Harris and Governor Gavin Newsom have reached out to New York
City's radical socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, amidst the growing influence of
the party's progressive wing. This momentum was reflected in the recent
internal selection processes, where several candidates backed by the Democratic
Socialists of America (DSA) won in various primary elections held in different
states across the country.
