A handwritten letter from Vance Boelter, convicted of the
murders of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark
Hortman, to then-FBI Director Kash Patel has reignited controversy due to its
accusations against Governor Tim Walz.
In the document, Boelter identified himself as the
perpetrator of the attacks and claimed he had been contacted to carry out an
operation that, according to him, had been ordered by Walz. Among his
accusations, he alleged that the governor had asked him to assassinate Senator
Amy Klobuchar.
Authorities described the letter as delusional,
conspiratorial, and baseless, and therefore Boelter's claims against Walz did
not constitute evidence that the governor ordered the attacks.
Boelter was convicted of the murders of Melissa and Mark
Hortman and the attacks against State Senator John Hoffman, his wife Yvette,
and their daughter Hope. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that he acted
alone and planned the attacks against the legislators.
The case returned to public debate after the contents of the
letter were made public, although Boelter's accusations against Minnesota
officials have not been supported by independent evidence.
