Washington, D.C. – U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized
the recent ruling on birthright citizenship, stating that the current
interpretation of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution should be
reviewed. He argued that it has led to situations that, in his opinion, do not
align with the original purpose of the constitutional provision.
During his remarks, Vance questioned the practice of foreign
nationals temporarily entering the United States, giving birth on U.S. soil,
and having their children automatically acquire citizenship, subsequently
granting them access to the rights and benefits associated with that status.
The Vice President also referenced the close 5-4 vote in the
U.S. Supreme Court decision, noting that the narrow margin reflects the fact
that the issue remains the subject of intense legal and constitutional debate.
He also stated that the ruling does not represent the
definitive end of the discussion and asserted that those advocating for a more
restrictive interpretation of birthright citizenship will continue to promote
legal and constitutional changes. In that regard, he indicated that
opportunities exist to reverse the current interpretation, as has occurred—he
affirmed—with other judicial decisions that, over time, were modified by the
U.S. legal system itself.
