The Swiss government announced the temporary closure of its
embassy in Tehran amid a complex diplomatic context in the region. However, Swiss
authorities confirmed that they will continue to serve as a channel of
communication between Iran and the United States, two countries that have not
maintained direct diplomatic relations for decades.
Switzerland has acted for years as a diplomatic intermediary
between the two nations, a role known as a “protecting power.” In this
capacity, the European country facilitates the exchange of official messages,
manages consular affairs, and helps maintain a certain level of indirect
dialogue between the governments of Washington and Tehran.
Although the closure of the diplomatic mission in the
Iranian capital is due to security considerations and the regional political
situation, the Swiss government emphasized that its commitment to diplomatic
mediation remains in place. To this end, communication mechanisms are expected
to be maintained through alternative diplomatic channels.
The continuation of this diplomatic bridge is considered
relevant in times of international tension, as it allows both countries to
maintain a formal channel of contact that can be key to transmitting messages,
managing crises, or addressing humanitarian and consular issues.
