Iranian-American journalist and activist Masih Alinejad
launched a scathing attack against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani after he
publicly criticized the US and Israeli military strikes against targets in
Iran.
Alinejad, known for her outspoken opposition to the Iranian
regime and her advocacy for civil rights in that country, rejected the mayor's
comments and accused him of adopting a stance that, according to her, ignores
the reality faced by millions of Iranians under the current political system.
In a direct message, she asked him to "stop lecturing Iranians about
peace," emphasizing that, from her perspective, those who live or have
lived under the regime's repression have a different view of the conflict.
The controversy comes at a time of heightened geopolitical
tension, in which military actions in the Middle East have generated intense
debate both internationally and within US domestic politics. Mamdani had
expressed concern about the humanitarian consequences and the possibility of
further escalation in the region, a stance that Alinejad deemed insufficient in
the face of what she describes as decades of authoritarianism in Iran.
The exchange reflects not only ideological differences on
foreign policy but also the diversity of opinions within the Iranian diaspora.
While some local leaders emphasize the need to avoid further violence,
activists like Alinejad insist that any analysis must take into account the
nature of the Iranian regime and the impact it has had on its population.
