The U.S. government asserted that Iranian authorities have
begun detaining American citizens, in what it describes as a politically
motivated hostage situation. The accusation comes amid persistent diplomatic
tensions between the two countries.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that the U.S.
administration considers the detention of its citizens on charges it deems
unfounded or unjustified unacceptable. In a forceful message, Rubio urged the
Iranian government to immediately cease these actions and release all Americans
currently being held in Iran.
U.S. officials maintain that the practice of detaining
foreigners to use them as a tool of diplomatic pressure exacerbates the already
fragile bilateral relationship and hinders any attempt at dialogue. Meanwhile,
Washington continues to evaluate diplomatic measures and other actions to
secure the safe return of its citizens.
