The British tabloid Daily Mail recently published a
photograph included in the so-called “Epstein files” showing theoretical
physicist Stephen Hawking smiling while posing with two women in swimsuits. The
image, described by the publication as “shocking,” is part of a collection of
documents and materials that have come to light in investigations related to
Jeffrey Epstein.
The publication generated immediate reactions on social
media and in international media, partly due to the contrast between Hawking’s
public figure—renowned worldwide for his contributions to cosmology and
theoretical physics—and the context in which the photograph was allegedly
taken. However, a person’s presence in the files or in material linked to Epstein
does not necessarily imply participation in illicit activities, a point that
various analysts and observers have emphasized in light of the dissemination of
this type of content.
For several years, the gradual release of documents related
to the Epstein case has triggered intense public scrutiny of businesspeople,
academics, and political figures who, at various times, crossed paths with the
financier at events or social gatherings. Each new image or record tends to
fuel the debate about the extent of their relationships and the nature of their
connections.
In the case of Hawking, who died in 2018, no formal charges
have been filed regarding illegal activities related to Epstein. Even so, the
circulation of the photograph has once again placed his name in the public
discourse, demonstrating the enduring impact the case continues to have on the
international media and political landscape.
