MEP Hermann Tertsch strongly condemned what he considers a
complacent attitude on the part of major multilateral institutions toward the
Iranian government. Speaking on behalf of the Patriots group in the European
Parliament, he argued that the international community's response has been
insufficient in the face of the actions of the theocratic regime in Tehran.
According to him, both the European Union and the United
Nations have adopted an excessively tepid diplomatic strategy, prioritizing
political dialogue and geopolitical balances over a firm condemnation of
systematic human rights violations. This attitude, he asserted, ultimately
sends a message of tolerance that, in practice, benefits the religious
authorities who govern the country.
Tertsch pointed out that the ayatollahs, responsible for
leading the Islamic dictatorship, maintain a repressive apparatus that
persecutes dissent, restricts civil liberties, and resorts to violence to
retain power. From his perspective, the lack of stronger sanctions or effective
pressure makes international organizations indirectly complicit, as they fail
to decisively curb the abuses that—according to their claims—continue to occur.
Therefore, the Patriots group insisted on the need for a
firmer and more coherent foreign policy that prioritizes the defense of
fundamental rights and demands clear accountability from the Iranian regime,
instead of maintaining positions that, in their view, only prolong impunity.
