New Temporary Tax Benefit for Seniors in the OBBBA Act

The tax law known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law on July 4, 2025, by President Donald Trump, incorporates a series of tax changes aimed at providing financial support to certain groups of taxpayers. One of the most significant elements of this legislation is an additional deduction specifically designed for individuals aged 65 and older, which will be available temporarily on tax returns for the 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 tax years.

Specifically, this provision allows senior taxpayers to claim a special deduction of up to an additional $6,000 when preparing their federal income tax return. This deduction is in addition to the standard deduction or itemized deductions that the taxpayer may already be claiming, with the goal of reducing the federal tax burden at this stage of life.

For married couples filing jointly—and where both spouses are at least 65 years old—the benefit can reach up to $12,000 in additional deductions, provided they meet the requirements established by law.
