Zohran Mamdani, the social democrat who just won the mayoral
race in New York City, began his term amid praise from his supporters and
criticism from his detractors. Just hours after defeating former Governor
Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, the new mayor stirred controversy by
posting a video on the social media platform X outlining his immediate
priorities for the transition period.
In the message, Mamdani acknowledged that the election
victory marks only the beginning of a complex process and asserted that “there
is much work ahead” to prepare for his arrival in municipal government. He
expressly thanked those who supported his candidacy and reminded them that,
during the final stretch of the campaign, he had asked his supporters to stop
sending financial contributions.
However, in this new phase, the mayor-elect encouraged New
Yorkers—especially those who identify as part of the “working class”—to make
voluntary contributions to help fund the transition efforts. This appeal has
generated mixed reactions: while some interpret it as a way to strengthen
community involvement, others question his request for financial support after
having asked for donations to stop during the campaign.
