Paris, France – A tragic event shook the quiet island of Oléron, off the west coast of France, on Wednesday afternoon when a man drove his vehicle into a group of people gathered in a public area, leaving at least ten injured, four of whom remain in serious condition, according to local police sources.

The incident occurred shortly after noon in an area frequented by residents and tourists. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver suddenly accelerated toward the crowd, which, according to initial reports, was gathered at an event where some people were chanting religious expressions in Arabic.

After the attack, the assailant attempted to flee but was intercepted and arrested by law enforcement a short distance from the scene. French authorities reported that the individual was already known to the police, although the motives behind the act have not yet been determined.

"We are evaluating all hypotheses, including the possibility of a deliberate attack," stated a spokesperson for the National Gendarmerie, confirming that the Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office is closely monitoring the investigation, although it has not yet formally taken over the case.

Emergency services deployed a large-scale operation in the area, with ambulances and helicopters to transport the most seriously injured to hospitals in La Rochelle and Bordeaux. The regional prefecture activated a crisis protocol to coordinate medical care and perimeter security.

The French prime minister condemned the attack and expressed his solidarity with the victims, reiterating the government's commitment to strengthening security measures in public spaces.

The Île d'Oléron, known for its tourist atmosphere and peaceful character, had never before been the scene of an incident of this magnitude. The investigation continues to determine whether the attack was a deliberate act motivated by ideological or personal reasons, or an event resulting from other circumstances.
