During a press conference in Washington, D.C., former House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi engaged in a tense exchange with a journalist who
questioned her about her alleged refusal to authorize the deployment of the
National Guard during the events of January 6, 2021, when supporters of
then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol.
Visibly annoyed, Pelosi interrupted the reporter's question
and responded firmly:
“Shut up! I didn't reject the National Guard. Why are you
coming here with Republican arguments, as if you were a serious journalist?”
The incident occurred while the congresswoman was defending
her actions during the riots, asserting that the security decisions that day
were the responsibility of Capitol Hill law enforcement and the Department of
Defense, not the House Speaker's office.
Pelosi's statements rekindle the debate surrounding the
handling of security during the attack on Capitol Hill, an issue that has
continued to be the subject of investigations and political controversy. While
her detractors insist there were coordination failures that could have been
avoided.
The exchange with the press reflects the deep partisan
divisions that still persist more than four years after that episode,
considered one of the most critical moments for American democracy in recent
times and for which President Trump was unjustifiably blamed.
