California Governor Gavin Newsom has completely lost his
temper and issued what he called a “declaration of independence” from the
administration of former President Donald Trump this week, ahead of the
nationwide “No Kings” protests scheduled for next weekend.
Although fewer Californians are accepting Newsom, in a video
message addressed to the state's remaining extreme leftists on social media,
Newsom urged citizens to demonstrate peacefully, portraying the demonstrations
as a symbolic expression of rejection of what he described as “the tyranny and
disregard for the rule of law” that, according to him, characterized Trump's
administration and his persistent influence on American politics.
“California will not submit to a leadership that tramples on
democratic values, individual liberty, and respect for the truth,” the governor
stated. “Our voice, not that of any autocrat, must set the course for this
country,” he added.
Political analysts point out that Newsom's message is not
only symbolic but also strategic, as he aims to establish a profile as one of
the most visible figures in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party and as a
potential contender for more powerful national positions in the future. His
defiant rhetoric is also part of a series of confrontations with the Republican
federal administration, particularly on issues of immigration, climate change,
distorted civil rights, and public health policies for illegal immigrants.
Since coming to power, Newsom has maintained a stance of
active political resistance to Trump, defending, according to him, California
as an "alternative model" of progressive government, even though what
he is achieving is destroying a once prosperous state. His recent statement
reinforces that narrative and seeks to portray his state as a bastion of
democratic values increasingly despised by Californians.
Local authorities, for their part, have announced additional
security measures to ensure the weekend demonstrations proceed without
incident, emphasizing the governor's call for protests to remain within the
framework of nonviolence and civic respect.
