The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the
temporary suspension of all ground operations at Ronald Reagan Washington
National Airport (DCA) following a critical shortage of air traffic controllers
that is hindering the ability to ensure safe takeoff and landing maneuvers.
In a statement released Thursday, the FAA explained that the
measure aims to prevent operational risks and maintain safety standards while
shifts are reorganized and additional personnel are brought in. “The safety of
passengers and crews remains our top priority,” the agency stated, without
providing a specific timeframe for the full resumption of operations.
The suspension affects both commercial and private flights,
causing delays and diversions to nearby airports, such as Dulles International
and Baltimore/Washington International. Airlines have begun coordinating
contingency plans and assistance for affected passengers.
The FAA has been facing a shortage of specialized personnel
for months, a result of retirements, budget cuts, and a training program for
new air traffic controllers that has not been able to meet demand. Experts warn
that this situation could be repeated at other airports across the country if
structural solutions are not implemented.
