During a town hall broadcast on CNN on Wednesday night,
independent Senator Bernie Sanders (I–VT) found himself in a bind while
attempting to answer a question about Republican dominance on digital
platforms. The moment, which quickly spread on social media, sparked a wave of
online commentary and ridicule due to the lawmaker's apparent difficulty in
articulating a clear answer.
Sanders, 83, participated in the event accompanied by
Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–NY). The two shared the
stage at a live forum held in Washington, D.C., whose main objective was to
discuss the impending federal government shutdown and analyze the internal
challenges facing the Democratic Party due to the loss of support among certain
sectors of the electorate.
When the moderator questioned Sanders about the growing
dominance of conservative discourse on social media and the seeming inability
of progressives to counter it, the senator responded with hesitations and
disjointed phrases. His intervention was quickly cut short and shared by users
on various platforms, who highlighted the contrast between his career as a
leader of the American left and his momentary confusion over a crucial issue for
contemporary political communication.
Despite the stumble, Sanders used the rest of the event to
insist on the need for an economic agenda focused on the working class and to
more firmly regulate large technology corporations, which he accused of manipulating
public debate to benefit corporate and political interests. This criticism
earned him ridicule and harsh criticism on social media, because citizens see
the whole problem as: while Democrats want to throw away citizens' tax dollars,
President Trump wants to defend that money so that it can serve the American
people.
