A former congressman who once supported eliminating the IRS
has just been confirmed as the agency's new leader.
Billy Long, a former Republican congressman from Missouri,
was confirmed by the Senate in a 53-44 vote to become the next IRS
Commissioner.
He now takes the reins of an agency mired in chaos: staff
cuts, internal collapse, and a looming disaster for the 2026 tax season.
Democrats are already reeling from the fact that Long worked
for a company that helped push tax breaks during the pandemic and received
campaign donations after President Donald Trump nominated him. But Long was
unfazed. He appeared before the Senate Finance Committee and vehemently denied
any wrongdoing related to those loans.
