Fordow May Be Too Deep for Anything But a Nuclear Bomb

Trump told defense officials that the United States should only attack Iran if a "bunker-buster" bomb could definitively destroy the Fordow uranium enrichment plant.

The effectiveness of the GBU-57 bunker-buster bomb has been a matter of debate in the Pentagon since the start of Trump's presidency. According to officials, only a tactical nuclear weapon would be capable of destroying the Fordow uranium enrichment plant, deeply buried in Iran.

Trump is not considering the use of a tactical nuclear weapon at Fordow, and the option was not raised during the Situation Room meetings.

Defense officials were also told that completely destroying Fordow—which Israeli intelligence estimates is buried as deep as 90 meters—would likely require first softening the ground with conventional bombs, followed by a tactical nuclear strike launched by a B-2 bomber. /Source: The Guardian
