The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives
passed the Protecting American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on Thursday, 208 to
208 in response to President Donald Trump's attempt to restrict voting by
non-citizens.
The SAVE Act, passed 220 to 208, now moves to the Senate,
where it will need the support of several Democrats to reach the 60 votes
needed for passage. Democrats have rejected the plan, despite polls showing
bipartisan support for voter ID laws.
A Gallup poll conducted ahead of the 2024 election indicated
that 84% of respondents support requiring photo ID to vote, and 83% support requiring
proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time, Fox News
reported.
