Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te emphasized peace and
dialogue with China, but stressed the need to strengthen defenses in the face
of rising tensions.
"Peace is priceless, but illusions are dangerous,"
he declared on his first anniversary in office.
China, which calls Lai a "separatist," continues
its military exercises near the island.
