The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will fund
commercial flights and offer a $1,000 stipend to undocumented foreign nationals
who wish to self-deport from the United States. This measure, according to DHS,
would save thousands of dollars.
According to the government, this will cost American
taxpayers 70% less than what it currently costs DHS to arrest, incarcerate, and
deport someone, which costs more than $17,000 on average. DHS projects that the
average cost of paying foreign nationals to self-deport, even with the stipend,
will not exceed $4,500.
The stipend will not be granted until a person is determined
to have self-deported. Foreign nationals will use the CBP Home self-deportation
application to apply for this assistance, and DHS anticipates that
self-deportations, which currently number in the hundreds, will increase
significantly following this announcement.
According to a press release, those who use the CBP Home app
to leave the U.S. will be “deprioritized for detention and removal” if they are
taking steps to leave the country, Fox News reported./CBrief
