President Donald Trump announced Friday morning that
Vietnamese leader To Lam is willing to eliminate tariffs to avoid being
penalized by the new U.S. tariffs on imports from the Southeast Asian country.
“I just had a very productive conversation with To Lam,
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who told me that Vietnam
wants to reduce its tariffs to zero if it reaches an agreement with the United
States. I thanked him on behalf of our country and told him I look forward to a
meeting soon,” Trump wrote.
“News of the conversation, which Trump posted on social
media, boosted the stocks of companies that manufacture some of their products
in Vietnam. Nike stock, for example, rose more than 4%. The Trump
administration imposed 46% tariffs on Vietnam earlier this week. Trump stated
Friday that he expected to meet with To Lam soon,” the Wall Street Journal
reported.
