Republicans in New York continue to gain support in heavily Democratic-leaning areas

Support for Republicans in New York, which has a strong Democratic lean, continues to grow nearly two months after President Donald Trump's inauguration.

The winner of a local race last week was a Republican in Southampton, a city of 70,000 people on Long Island. Democrat John Leonard lost to Republican Richard Martel in the race for a city council seat previously held by a Democrat.

With more than 99% of the votes counted, Martel garnered 53% of the vote and won by a few hundred votes.

New York is overwhelmingly Democratic, but some areas have a surprisingly strong and even growing Republican lean. Long Island has three congressmen, two of them Republicans. In November 2016, the district awarded the most votes to President Donald Trump of any city.
