COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 19, 2026 — Federal agents and local police responded Monday to the area around a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, after receiving a report of shots fired that mobilized law enforcement.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
(ATF) initially reported that its agents were responding to a possible shooting
in the vicinity of the religious site, located northeast of downtown.
Later, Columbus Police clarified that the shooting occurred
in the parking lot of an apartment complex next to the Alrahma Mosque. The
incident left at least one person dead, and a second victim was reported, whose
condition was not confirmed in initial reports.
Authorities emphasized that the shooting was not directed at
the mosque or the people inside. At the time, the mosque was hosting an event
that, according to police, was unrelated to the shooting outside.
The intervention of federal agents came as part of the
initial response to the report, while local authorities began investigating the
circumstances of the attack.
At the time of the first reports, the identity of the
perpetrator and the possible motive for the shooting had not been publicly
disclosed.
The investigation continues to clarify what happened and
determine if anyone else was involved.
