FORT HOOD, Texas – The U.S. Army has scheduled the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan for Thursday, December 3, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Central Time. Hasan was sentenced to death for the 2009 attack at what was then Fort Hood, Texas.
The execution will be carried out by firing squad, according
to the order issued by the Army. President Donald Trump approved the death
penalty on October 2, after the military appeals process concluded with the
confirmation of the sentence.
Hasan, a former U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, was
convicted in 2013 for the deaths of 13 people and the wounding of 32 others
during the November 5, 2009, attack. The shooting occurred at a Fort Hood
medical facility, where soldiers were conducting paperwork and preparations
before their deployments.
If carried out, the execution would have historic
significance within the U.S. Armed Forces: it would be the first military
execution since 1961 and the first military execution by firing squad since
World War II.
The Army reported that the execution will take place at Fort
Hood, the same military base where Hasan perpetrated the attack. The decision
returns the case to the site of the events that occurred nearly 17 years ago.
However, the date could still be changed. Hasan retains the
option to appeal his conviction in federal civilian courts, which could
potentially delay the execution.
Hasan's execution is one of the most significant death
penalty cases within the U.S. military justice system in recent decades.
