MEXICO CITY— Mexican businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego reacted to the results of the first round of the presidential election in Brazil and celebrated the advance of Liberal Party candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, who will face current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a runoff election.
Through his social media accounts, Salinas Pliego maintained
that the Brazilian electoral trend confirms a political shift in Latin America
and asserted that "the left is on its way out," considering that this
political sector "lacks morality and delivers no results."
The businessman also expressed his satisfaction with Flávio
Bolsonaro's electoral performance and his confidence that the result could mark
a political change in the region.
“I am pleased by Flávio Bolsonaro’s promising victory,” said
Salinas Pliego, who also referenced Mexico and the 2030 electoral process,
expressing his hope that Mexicans can promote political change and “reestablish
a republic that guarantees justice and security for all Mexicans.”
Salinas Pliego’s message came after Brazil’s Superior
Electoral Court confirmed the results of the first round of the presidential
election.
Flávio Bolsonaro obtained 47.03% of the valid votes, while
Lula da Silva received 45.16%. Since neither candidate secured more than half
of the valid votes, both will advance to the second round, scheduled for
October 25.
The second round will be decisive: Brazilians will have to
choose between Bolsonaro’s progressive right and Lula’s leftist backwardness,
according to opinions expressed on social media, to determine who will occupy
the presidency for the next term.
The Brazilian result has generated reactions among leaders
and political figures from various Latin American countries, while the contest
between Bolsonaro and Lula is shaping up to be one of the most relevant
political events in the region in the coming weeks.
