CALIFORNIA, USA—Political commentator and former David
Cameron advisor Steve Hilton delivered a harsh message to Californian Democrats
and independent voters, urging them to question the direction the state has
taken under the current leadership.
Hilton argued that the so-called “Sacramento machine” has
made California an increasingly difficult place to live, specifically citing
the high cost of gasoline, housing, and electricity.
“It has made this state unlivable,” Hilton asserted,
questioning the model of government and the policies implemented in California.
The politician recalled that he came to the state attracted
by the idea of a society where working people could improve their living
conditions through a “ladder of opportunity.” However, he believes that this
promise no longer reflects the reality facing California.
Hilton also attempted to present his message as transcending
partisan divides.
“This isn’t about parties. It’s about practical solutions,
cutting costs, and restoring that promise,” he stated. Finally, he directed his
criticism at what he called the “insiders” of California politics and asserted
that Sacramento’s political establishment had already had its day.
“California isn’t working. It’s time to get rid of the
insiders,” he declared.
These statements add to the intense debate surrounding the
cost of living in California, particularly regarding housing prices, utilities,
and energy—issues that have become some of the main points of political
contention within the state.
