The governments of the United States and China will hold a
new round of bilateral talks on artificial intelligence (AI) in September, in
an effort to establish cooperation mechanisms to address the challenges and
risks associated with the rapid development of this technology.
The meeting will bring together representatives from both
nations to exchange views on the regulation, responsible use, and security of
the most advanced artificial intelligence systems, considered by specialists to
be one of the areas with the greatest impact on the economy, security, and
international stability in the coming decades.
The agenda includes an analysis of possible measures to
mitigate the risks arising from increasingly sophisticated AI models,
particularly those capable of performing complex tasks autonomously, generating
highly realistic content, or being used for military, cyber, or disinformation
purposes.
Although Washington and Beijing maintain intense
technological and commercial competition, both governments have recognized the
need to keep communication channels open on issues where a lack of coordination
could have global consequences. In this context, artificial intelligence has
become a priority issue in the bilateral relationship.
The talks will also seek to strengthen dialogue between
experts and authorities to promote safety, transparency, and oversight
standards in the development of new AI tools, as well as explore mechanisms to
reduce the risk of incidents arising from the misuse of these technologies.
