Greece secured an exemption related to the transport of
Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) following the approval of the European
Union's 21st sanctions package against Russia.
According to reports, Athens invoked its veto power during
negotiations to allow Greek-flagged vessels to continue transporting Russian
LNG to countries outside the European Union.
The exemption permits Greek vessels to maintain these trade
operations to non-EU markets, despite the tightening of sanctions adopted by
the European bloc.
The decision reflects the internal negotiations that
accompanied the approval of the new package of restrictive measures by the
European Union, in which some member states sought to safeguard strategic
interests linked to their maritime and energy sectors.
