US President Donald Trump once again found himself in the
spotlight after making a series of statements during a speech addressing cases
of financial fraud related to public programs in Minnesota. In his remarks,
Trump directed strong attacks against members of the Somali community in that
state and against Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, one of the most visible
figures of the progressive wing in the US Congress.
During his speech, the president referred to the fact that
federal authorities have discovered billions of dollars in public funds
diverted through fraudulent schemes. Trump stated that, in recent months,
multiple irregularities related to the use of taxpayer money have been
identified and maintained that several people are already facing legal
proceedings in these cases.
However, the statements that generated the most controversy
were those related to the Somali community residing in Minnesota and to
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Trump used a particular tone when referring to both
of them, accusing them of corruption and indirectly linking them to fraudulent
practices, facts that had come to light in the preceding days.
The Republican even suggested that Omar should not remain in
the United States. These statements were interpreted by citizens as a call to
send back to their countries of origin all those who harm the country.
Ilhan Omar, born in Somalia and a naturalized U.S. citizen,
has been one of the most questioned immigrants for years due to her unexplained
wealth. The congresswoman has repeatedly denounced in her defense that the
attacks against her are intended to fuel rhetoric of racial and religious
division within the country.
Minnesota is home to one of the largest Somali communities
in the United States, particularly in the city of Minneapolis.
