Dutch commentator and political activist Eva
Vlaardingerbroek has once again sparked controversy and garnered significant
public support in the European debate after openly opposing the European Union
(EU), an institution she described as a “totalitarian” system that, she
asserted, must be abolished.
During a recent public appearance, Vlaardingerbroek stated
that the European Union's political and bureaucratic structure is deeply
corrupt and maintained that its problems can no longer be corrected through
simple internal reforms. “The totalitarian European Union must be abolished,”
she declared emphatically, making her critical stance toward the bloc's current
model clear.
The Dutch analyst argued that the foundations upon which the
EU operates are “rotten,” which is why she considers it futile to attempt to
transform the organization from within. “I don’t believe in reforms when the
foundations are rotten,” she declared, in a message that quickly went viral on
social media and sparked supportive reactions from various political sectors
across the continent.
Eva Vlaardingerbroek has become a well-known figure within
conservative and Eurosceptic movements in Europe, where she frequently issues
harsh criticism of immigration policies, the centralization of power in
Brussels, and decisions driven by European institutions, which she believes are
destroying Europe. Her speeches often revolve around the defense of national
sovereignty, cultural identity, and opposition to supranational structures that
limit the autonomy of member states.
The statements also reignited the debate about the future of
the European Union in a context marked by political tensions, economic crises,
migration conflicts, absurd impositions, and differences among European
governments regarding energy, military, and regional integration issues.
Meanwhile, Eurosceptic sectors endorsed Vlaardingerbroek's words and pointed
out that the EU has become detached from the interests of its citizens.
Analysts believe that this type of rhetoric reflects the
growth of nationalist movements fighting to save Europe. Although proposals to
abolish the European Union remain a minority view in institutional terms,
criticism of Brussels has gained traction in the public debate in recent years.
