Thanks to health policies championed by the Trump administration and Secretary Robert Kennedy, the U.S. BANNED potassium bromate—a common chemical used in pizza flour—which is classified as a human carcinogen (linked to kidney and thyroid cancer). In many countries, this chemical had been banned for YEARS, but in the U.S., it was only recently possible to prohibit it.
This achievement was realized despite the fact that, while public health experts applauded Kennedy's initiative, many questioned its feasibility. Marion Nestle, Professor Emerita of Nutrition and Food Studies at New York University, noted that the FDA lacks the necessary resources to undertake the evaluation of food additives.
"I find it hard to believe that this administration will give the FDA the resources it needs, especially while agency staff are being laid off," she stated.
Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf highlighted the resistance of both the food industry and Congress to any reform. "The industry has resisted; the Republican Congress has blocked it. If they are in favor now, let's seize the opportunity and get it done," said Califf.
Nevertheless, the objective has been achieved.
