During an official appearance, the Secretary of the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, stated that, under
President Joe Biden's administration, federal resources were allegedly
allocated to individuals linked to child trafficking networks to act as sponsors
for migrant children entering the country without an adult.
According to her testimony, the allegation points to serious
flaws in the system for assigning guardians or sponsors for unaccompanied
minors, which would have allowed individuals with criminal records or alleged
ties to illicit activities to receive these children. Noem maintained that such
practices, if proven, would represent a breach of the children's safety and a
violation of the protocols designed to protect them.
The statements come amid the political debate surrounding
migration management at the U.S.-Mexico border and the treatment of
unaccompanied minors crossing the border during the previous administration.
The issue continues to generate controversy, both due to its legal implications
and the humanitarian impact on thousands of migrant children each year.
