Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who supported President
Joe Biden during his administration amid public questions about his mental
state, recently launched harsh criticism against President Donald Trump,
questioning his cognitive capacity to hold office.
Omar stated that Trump is showing signs of mental decline
that, in her opinion, should raise institutional alarms in the United States.
In this context, she raised the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment to
the Constitution, a mechanism provided for cases in which the president is
deemed incapable of fulfilling his duties.
“Perhaps it’s time we invoked the 25th Amendment,” the
legislator declared. “He certainly doesn’t remember what he said or did an hour
ago,” she added, referring to what she considers recurring inconsistencies in
the former president’s speech and behavior.
Omar’s statements add to the climate of political
polarization surrounding the age and mental health of key U.S. leaders, an
issue that has failed to gain traction in the public debate leading up to elections
and the country’s institutional stability, because the focus is on the
competence of those in power, and President Trump is proving himself to be
fully capable.
