Washington, D.C. – Amid the prolonged shutdown of the
federal government, now exceeding five weeks, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson
blamed Democrats for creating and exacerbating the current health crisis,
which, he said, they are now using as an argument to demand more than $1
trillion in new public spending.
During a press conference at the Capitol, Johnson criticized
the fact that much of the funding requested by the Democratic bloc would be
used to maintain subsidies for health insurance premiums under the program
known as Obamacare, a policy that Republicans have questioned for years due to
its fiscal impact.
“Those who created the health crisis now intend to use it as
political leverage to expand federal spending without control,” the Republican
leader stated, emphasizing that his party maintains its demand for a clean
budget resolution, that is, one without amendments or discretionary increases.
The legislative gridlock has kept the government partially
shut down for more than a month, affecting hundreds of thousands of federal
workers and various essential public services. According to Johnson, Democrats
have refused to support a bipartisan measure to reopen the government,
prioritizing, he said, “political interests over the needs of the country.”
Despite Democratic resistance, the Republican proposal was
ultimately passed in the House of Representatives by a simple majority,
obtained with the support of the conservative bloc. However, the lack of
consensus in the Senate continues to paralyze the reopening process, prolonging
economic and administrative uncertainty across the country.
Political analysts point out that the confrontation between
the two chambers reflects a deeper struggle over the direction of federal
spending and the government's role in healthcare, a debate that could define
the tone of the next election cycle.
