The legal status of those detained during the Generation Z
march, held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in Mexico City's Zócalo, began to
be defined this Monday in the Mexico City courts. So far, three people have
been formally charged with robbery and assault, after the Public Prosecutor's
Office presented evidence that, in the judge's opinion, was sufficient to
initiate criminal proceedings against them.
During the initial hearing, the judge ordered them to appear
and sign in every 15 days at the supervision unit located in the Doctores
neighborhood, in the Cuauhtémoc borough, as a precautionary measure. With this,
the defendants will face the proceedings while free, although subject to
judicial monitoring.
The march, organized by youth groups and drawing thousands
of participants of all ages and social classes, resulted in a series of
incidents at its conclusion, where isolated groups clashed with other
participants and bystanders. There were reports of brutal police aggression
against citizens, including assaults against minors, incidents that were
publicly denounced and are currently part of the investigations being conducted
by the Mexico City Attorney General's Office (FGJCDMX).
Meanwhile, six other detainees requested an extension of the
constitutional deadline, a legal recourse that allows them to postpone the
determination of their legal status until the extended period for their defense
attorneys to review the case files and for the Public Prosecutor's Office to
present additional evidence has concluded. Their hearing will resume in the
coming days.
Authorities reported that the review of the remaining cases
will continue throughout the afternoon and evening. In total, the Mexico City
Attorney General's Office is analyzing several charges that include various
criminal offenses, among them property damage, dispossession, and disturbing
the peace. Judicial decisions will determine how many of those detained will
face criminal proceedings and how many may be released due to lack of evidence.
Meanwhile, civil organizations and social observers who were
present at the march have requested a transparent and lawful investigation,
both for those who may have committed acts of aggression and to ensure that
there are no unjustified arrests. Local authorities reiterated that the
proceedings will be conducted in accordance with due process and that the
complaints filed by victims and witnesses will be followed up on.
Regarding the police aggression against citizens that has
been widely publicized on social media, no legal proceedings have been
initiated against the officers involved.
