In a vote demonstrating broad bipartisan support, the House
of Representatives passed a resolution Friday morning condemning the so-called
“horrors of socialism.” The measure garnered 285 votes in favor and 98 against,
with two abstentions, solidifying its position as one of the most widely
supported measures on this issue in recent months.
The Republican caucus voted unanimously in support of the
resolution, while 86 Democratic lawmakers also joined in its approval. No
Republican member cast a vote against it.
The legislative decision came just hours before the
scheduled meeting between President Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani, the
mayor-elect of New York City, who ideologically identifies with democratic
socialism. This meeting has generated considerable political anticipation due
to the marked differences in vision between the president and the future New
York leader.
The approved resolution seeks to establish the House's
position on policies associated with socialist regimes, stating that, according
to its proponents, these systems have resulted in systematic human rights
violations, economic decline, and repression in various parts of the world.
While the document does not entail direct legislative changes, it represents an
official stance that could influence future debates on public policy and
ideological orientations within Congress.
