Buckingham Palace announced a significant change in the
public role of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, on Thursday. In an official
statement, the Royal Household announced that the son of the late Queen
Elizabeth II will no longer use his royal title and will henceforth be
identified as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, a name derived from the family name
of the dynasty.
The statement also confirms that the prince will move from
Royal Lodge, the residence he has occupied for decades on the grounds of
Windsor Castle. According to the statement issued by the palace, the decision
“reflects the Royal Family’s ongoing commitments to transparency and
institutional renewal.”
Although the statement does not detail the specific reasons
for the change, the move is interpreted as a new stage in the process of Andrew
distancing himself from the official duties of the British monarchy, from which
he was removed in recent years following various controversies.
