President Donald Trump responded on social media to the
Supreme Court's unsigned ruling issued Friday, which prevents his
administration from deporting Venezuelans in the country illegally and
identified as members of a gang he considers a terrorist organization.
The high court ruled 7 to 2 against Trump's invocation of
the Alien Enemies Act, a century-old wartime law used to expedite the
deportation of certain illegal immigrants. The administration argued that the
law granted authority for the rapid removal of individuals deemed threats to
national security, including Venezuelan citizens allegedly linked to violent
criminal organizations.
However, the court blocked the administration's attempt to
use the law for such purposes and remanded the case to the Fifth Circuit Court
of Appeals, based in New Orleans, for further review. The ruling also means
that the Venezuelans can remain in the country illegally for the time being.
