Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Representative Maxine
Waters clashed during a hearing on the Department of Government Efficiency's
access to her agency's information. At one point, the Trump Cabinet member
reminded the California Democrat that "there is no such thing as a DOGE
employee."
Waters began her questioning by stating that DOGE CEO Elon
Musk and his subordinates have had "unrestricted" access to the
country's financial systems.
"Do you know the level, type, or nature of the security
clearances and training required to access information stored on Treasury, IRS,
or Consumer Financial Protection Bureau computers?" Waters asked.
"Yes, I know, and I think we would have a disagreement
over the definition of the word 'unrestricted,'" Bessent responded.
