CNN wanted to question Trump's tariff strategy, but found the explanation reasonable

Lutnick drops a $1.2 trillion truth bomb on CNN and explains why Trump uses tariffs to fight back.

Dana Bash tried to challenge the Trump administration's entire tariff strategy.

But Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick didn't give up; he presented the results.

"The United States has a $1.2 trillion trade deficit."

"That means other people are selling more American products than we are selling them. And that's simply not balanced. It's not fair."

He then listed the main cause:

"We're losing $1.2 trillion a year, of which, directly and indirectly, to China. That's about $1 trillion."

And here's the key point CNN didn't want to hear:

"It's simply unsustainable to have $1.2 trillion exported to the rest of the world... it's piling up, and over time, it's sinking us."

That's why, Lutnick explained, Trump is setting limits.

“The idea is that the president wants balanced and fair trade, and tariffs are the tool to achieve that.”
