The Michoacán municipality of Quiroga invites locals and
foreigners to its Holy Week program, which for the first time unites the
efforts of the municipal government, the Catholic Church, and social
organizations.
Today, at a press conference led by the current mayor, Alma
Mireya González Sánchez, the program that locals and visitors will be able to
enjoy from April 10 to 19 was announced.
González Sánchez said she is convinced that Quiroga now has
everything it needs to cease being a place of passage and become a place to
stay and enjoy for several days, not only the attractions of the municipal
seat, but also the communities that offer attractions for rural tourism lovers
and those who enjoy nature.
Quiroga, whose first name was Cocupao when it was founded,
received its current name in 1852 by the State Congress, in honor of Vasco de
Quiroga. This is a municipality whose municipal seat, visitors can enjoy a
gastronomic tour with the legendary carnitas, pozole batido, corn gorditas, and
the bread known as Campechanas. In addition, visitors can enjoy practically
countless handicrafts.
Furthermore, for those who enjoy rural tourism, Quiroga has
beautiful and interesting communities, so they have also been invited to visit
them during the upcoming Holy Week, which has been carefully prepared so that
families who come to the municipality can enjoy the activities in peace and
safety.
Quiroga is an
opportunity for a Journey into Tradition and Culture.
During the aforementioned press conference, it was
highlighted that 2025 marks the 85th anniversary of the performance of the
Passion of Christ in Quiroga by the Buena Voluntad Theater, now with 120 people
on stage.
In the indigenous community of San Gerónimo, everything is
ready for a gastronomic, artisan, and cultural fair on Friday, April 18. The
crafts will be displayed in the community's main plaza.
Regarding religious ceremonies, it was announced that
activities will begin on April 13th with the blessing of palms, departing from
the Plaza de las Altas Torres at 11:30 a.m., heading to the Parish of San Diego
de Alcalá. On April 10th, the Altar of Dolores will be blessed; it will be
placed at 5:00 p.m. in the Plaza Belisario Domínguez.
On April 16, the Passion Play will be performed by the Judea
Group. On April 17, the Judea Group will also perform the Passion of Christ, it
was specified. On Holy Thursday, April 17, the Lord's Supper, or the Mass of
the Washing of the Feet, will be held. Celebrations are scheduled for that day
in the community chapels. Following this, the Procession of the Lord will begin
at 8:30 p.m., departing from Plaza Madrigal de las Altas Torres toward the
Parish of San Diego de Alcalá. Among many other Holy Week activities, the
procession will include The Samaritan Woman, Beatitudes, The Stoning of Mary
Magdalene, The Public Life of Jesus, The Expulsion from the Temple, Jesus
Before Caiaphas, The Last Supper, Holy Women, among many other performances.
